I have been toying with the idea of creating a patchwork quilt inspired by the suffragettes using fabrics inspired by the era for a while. For the past few months I have been sketching blocks in a notebook, using classic patchwork block designs which could link to the suffragettes and then creating my own patterns in my trusty bullet journal. The whole thing has been really rather relaxing, doodling the blocks, colouring the block and then working out the maths for the seam allowances. I am not a maths fan, but this has been a rather lovely way to spend an evening or two.
Anyway, the corona-virus hit and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to start my quilt and then I lost my job. I hate the phrase 'lost my job', it almost implies it was my fault rather than the truth that it was mismanagement of the company by the leaders. Anyway we won't dwell on this, but the thing is, it all came at once. Isolation, unemployment and sleepless nights. So, I am throwing myself into my quilt, to keep the anxiety at bay, to be productive each day and to ensure I rise.
This is why I chose to call the blog "Still I Rise" partly based on the poem of the same name by Maya Angelou, with its links to women's oppression and partly because this patchwork quilt is helping me to rise each day.
