Mary Wollstonecraft to me is the mother of the feminist movement in the UK. Born in 1759 she was a English writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights. In 1792 she wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman where she argued that women are not inferior but instead haven't been educated to the same standard that men have been. She believed that men and women are rational beings.
Sadly, after Mary died her husband wrote and published an full account of her life. The text was before it's time in many, as it showed her as a full human being, the light in her life and the dark spells. Clearly the 1790's were not ready to read about a woman who had close friendships with other women, love affairs, an illegitimate child, mental health illnesses which lead to suicide attempts or her painful death. William Godwin (her husband) thought he had written the account of her life with love and compassion but friends at the time said he had stripped his dead wife naked and she was ridiculed in death for the next 100 years. Thankfully today we can see the intelligent woman that she was.
Anyway, here is to the mother of the movement. And here is my Mother's Own block, if I am honest, I am not the biggest fan of these patterns together.
