Helena Florence Normanton was the first female barrister and the second woman to be called to the bar in the UK. When she married she was the first woman to have a passport in the name she was born with. When she was 12 years old she was sat in a solicitors office with her mother who couldn't understand what the solicitor was saying. She was able to translate the information to her mother to help her understand and it was the solicitor who suggested she becomes a barrister. She realised this situation was a form of sex discrimination and so she wished to help women access the law, a profession at the time which was only open to men. She was the first woman to obtain a divorce for her client, the first woman to lead the prosecution in a murder trial, and the first woman to conduct a trial in America and to appear at the High Court and The Old Bailey. She also was a feminist and campaigned for rights for women. She said: "While any woman was held back from the position to which her talents drew her, the whole of womanhood was lowered".
Time to sew. I 'fussy cut' the bottom big triangle to have the bird in the middle, I am pretty chuffed with the way it looks. Once you sew the two big triangles together the you need to sew all the small triangles together. I then sewed the top three squares to the big block. This allows you to sew the squares together on the right in one long strip. Once you have done the cutting of the pieces, it is a very quick block to assemble.
