Block six: Brick pavement - the road to Westminster

Updated: Jun 2, 2021

This block is called Brick Pavement and I decided to name it after the March the suffragettes did on their way to Westminster, also known as Black Friday (1910). On the 18th of November 1910, 300 women marched to the Houses of Parliament to demand the right to vote. The day earned the name Black Friday due to the brutality, both physical and sexual inflicted on the women by the police and male bystanders. The police arrested 4 men and 115 women however the following day the charges were dropped. Suffragette Ada Wright (photo to the right), fifty years old at the time, was featured on the front page of the Daily Mirror on 19 November 1910. She had been struck by a policeman as she tried to enter the House of Commons. The Edwardian newspapers did not report any of the sexual attacks (just saying, the newspapers were run by men) however this does not mean they didn't happen!

Time to quilt.

Each of the mini triangles were cut from a 7cm square, this allows the seam allowance for the triangles.

First sew the small triangles together and then attach to a bigger triangle. Then it is simple, sew the big triangles together and then sew the newly formed squares together.
