100 years on and only 34% of MP's are women. Is this good enough progress? Women still only make up one third of the House of Commons. It is even worse in the House of Lords with women only making up 27%, however given we were only allowed in 1958. Also, can we just take a look at the name House of Lords? A woman in the House of Lords is called a Baroness so can we please rename the House of Lords? How about The House of Lords and Baronesses? Just a thought!
This block was quite tricky. All of the other blocks are quite simple as they work on a grid method of 3,4,5 or 6 squares. This block works on triangles and as such is trickier. Also, I looked at blocks online I likes and then designed them to fit in with the size of quilt I wanted. This means all of my blocks I have had to work out the seam allowance and size of each piece, which is easy when it is a square, much trickier when it is triangles. So to try and explain what I did is even trickier, but lets have a go...
First I drew out my pattern pieces. I divided the square into four squares and then one of the four squares into half diagonally. This gave me a triangle to work with. Now thinking Pythagoras' theorem, on the hypotenuse divide it into three with the centre triangle being slightly bigger. I wanted this block to measure 20cm so each small individual block (of which there are four) needed to measure 11.5x11.5cm to include the seam allowance needed. Then as I had made a paper pattern piece, I cut out the pieces and used them to cut my fabric out with. It quickly became less daunting as I went through the process. In total this block needs 8 of these triangles.
Once you have cut out all of your pieces of fabric it is easier to understand how they go together. All the fabrics here feel like classic suffragette colours.
Next, sew the three triangles in each small triangular block together (see the picture below) then sew two triangular blocks together to make a square.
Finally sew all four squares together and you have the final block. As I am designing all these blocks myself and working out the seam allowances, it is honestly as little miracle every time they actually work out and make a 20cm block.
