Block three: Bride's knot - the invisible women

Updated: Jun 2, 2021

Block three is named after all the women who upon marrying became property of their husbands and therefore became invisible. I cannot imagine marrying someone and becoming their legal property! This block is also named after a brilliant book by Caroline Criado-Perez called Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men. I recently listened to this book and it opened up my eyes to just how much of the world (almost all of it) is designed for men and women have to adapt.

Being 'property' of your husband only ended in the 19th century, up until that point, because she was not a person legally, she could not…

  • own any property (including the clothes on her back)

  • own or control her own body

  • make decisions for her children against her husband’s wishes

  • sign legal documents or enter into contracts

  • keep her own salary

  • get any education against her husband’s wishes

I mean, what! I have no words, so lets get on with the sewing...

This block is quite simple to sew, sew the small triangles together first, then sew the blocks together in strips and then sew the strips together. My lovely mum (who is a very talented quilter) showed me how to pin the blocks to make sure all the points match. I am pretty chuffed with the point matching on this block.
